JOB DESCRIPTION: Direct Support Professional (DSP)

SCOPE:

Assist in the development of the program; implementation of individual program goals, plan and implement community based activities focusing on participant’s choices; assist with personal care as needed and assigned; assist Program Director in implementation of the program; assist and/or substitute for fellow DSP as needed. DSP adhere to the policies and procedures set forth by The Arc Dearborn Board of Directors.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Provide input and assist Program Director in planning and evaluating the program and participant’s goals.
  2. Assist all staff and substitute for DSP as needed in special situations.
  3. Assist in the implementation of individual planned program goals for each participant.
  4. Maintain and document records of participant accidents/incidents as required.
  5. Notify immediate supervisor of concerns/issues regarding participants, maintenance and repairs in the facility or company vehicles.
  6. Participate in scheduled staff meetings and other meetings as assigned.
  7. Assist all participants in being actively involved in the daily activities to achieve greater independence using person-centered planning and self-determination.
  8. Maintain and submit all required records and reports.
  9. Accompany and transport participants, volunteers and staff on scheduled community outings.
  10. Supervise lunch period. Oversee arrivals and departures of participants.
  11. Perform any other duties related to the field of service as may be assigned by the Program Director, Administrator, and/or Executive Director.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS & EDUCATION:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Successful completion of Detroit Wayne Integrated Health Network’s Required Courses.
  • Certification in CPR and First Aid.
  • Experience working with people with intellectual or other developmental disabilities.
  • Ability to relate positive image to participants, their families, support people and the community.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with peers and supervisor.
  • Good physical health.

ESSENTIAL JOB REQUIREMENTS/FUNCTIONS:

  1. Employee must be at least (18) years of age.
  2. Employee must be able to read and write proficiently.
  3. Employee must have and maintain a Michigan’s drivers license, proof of good driving records and retain the ability to be insured through The Arc Dearborn’s insurance center.
  4. Employee must be able to successfully complete all required training in the required time allotted.
  5. Employee must be physically capable of transferring, assisting with transfers and lifting persons who require physical assistance.
  6. Employee must be able to reach and bend as they assist participants with physical activities.

EVALUATION CRITERIA MAY INCLUDE:

  • Attendance and punctuality.
  • Ability to work with and complement staff, Program Director and Executive Director.
  • Initiative and ability to assist with and at times lead activities for groups in program and community settings.
  • Attitude toward participants, families, staff, and supervising professionals.

The Arc Dearborn’s Program Director and Executive Director.
